Sugar House Review
ABOUT
Sugar House Review is an independent, nonprofit poetry-only journal founded in 2009 by John Kippen, Nano Taggart, Jerry VanIeperen, and Natalie Young. It began as the only independent print poetry journal in Utah and takes its name from the Sugar House neighborhood of Salt Lake City. The magazine has built a reputation for eclectic, poem-forward issues, regular Pushcart Prize nominations, and an associated reading series (Helicon West) that connects it to a broader literary community beyond the page.
Starting in 2026, Sugar House Review shifted its publishing model: it still puts out two issues a year, but one is a traditional literary-magazine issue and the other is a chapbook in its expanding "Microdose" series (the first being Rob Carney's Writing Games). The site emphasizes subscriptions and issue purchases over open browsing of content, and submission mechanics, fees, and pay rates are not posted on the main pages — prospective contributors should check current guidelines directly via editors@sugarhousereview.com (book reviews go to a separate address) before assuming terms. The journal is run out of a PO Box in Cedar City, UT, reflecting its small, editor-driven operation rather than an institutional backing.
