RHINO Poetry
ABOUT
RHINO is an independent, all-volunteer poetry annual based in Evanston, Illinois, publishing continuously since 1976 — making it one of the longer-running small-press poetry magazines in the U.S. It grew out of the Chicago-area poetry workshop scene and has kept that DIY, collectively-run character for five decades (the masthead rotates among editors rather than centering on a single named editor). The magazine is known for its annual print issue, an annual Translation Prize, an Editors' Prize and Founders' Prize awarded from the general submission pool, and a steady record of Pushcart Prize nominations. It has also been recognized as a Women Who Submit-certified publication for gender and racial diversity on its masthead.
Poets submit through a general submissions window (open reading period announced on the site, via Submittable) alongside separate calls for the Translation Prize; no submission fee or payment amount is stated on the site, so poets should check the current submissions page for terms before sending work, and should not assume payment. The magazine publishes one print annual per year (the current volume is sold directly, e.g. 'RHINO 2026' for $15 plus shipping), with prizewinners and finalists announced publicly on the site months before the issue ships. It's a good target for poets who want a long-running, community-rooted journal with an active reading series and social media presence (Instagram, Facebook, YouTube) rather than a high-paying or fast-turnaround market — response times and fee/pay details fluctuate by cycle and are best confirmed on the live submissions page.
