Prairie Schooner has been published at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln since 1926 without interruption, a Great Plains institution that Willa Cather's home state built into a national journal. Its alumni list runs from Eudora Welty and Raymond Carver to Ted Kooser, and under Kwame Dawes's editorship (2011–2021) it became a major venue for African and African-diaspora poetry while remaining aesthetically open.
The journal reads free submissions September through May, awards several annual prizes (Strousse, Bentley, and others) chosen from the year's pages at no entry cost, and co-publishes the African Poetry Book Fund's series — an outsized institutional footprint for a quarterly with a covered-wagon logo.
