Poet Lore

Founded in 1889 by Shakespeare scholars Charlotte Porter and Helen A. Clarke — a couple who edited it together for decades — Poet Lore is the oldest poetry journal in the United States. It published early American appearances of Ibsen, Chekhov, and Tagore in its world-literature years before settling into its modern identity as a discoverer of American poets.

Since 1976 it has been published by The Writer's Center in Bethesda, Maryland. The journal reads free submissions year-round, publishes two handsome issues annually, and its "Poets Introducing Poets" feature has a long record of surfacing writers before their first books.
