Nimrod International Journal
ABOUT
Nimrod International Journal has operated out of The University of Tulsa since 1956, making it one of the older continuously running literary magazines in the United States. Over nearly seven decades it has published poetry, fiction, and nonfiction (including work in translation) from writers who went on to considerable renown — W. H. Auden, Pablo Neruda, Rita Dove, Stanley Kunitz, Denise Levertov, Octavio Paz, and Mark Doty among them — while also making a point of publishing emerging and lesser-known writers alongside established names. The journal is best known today for administering the Pablo Neruda Prize for Poetry, an annual contest that has become one of its primary vehicles for discovering new work and sustaining its visibility beyond Tulsa.
Nimrod appears twice yearly, with each issue mixing poetry, short fiction, and nonfiction; general submissions are handled through Submittable (nimrodjournal.submittable.com/submit) rather than by mail or email. The site does not post explicit reading-period dates, fee amounts, or pay rates for general submissions — those specifics, along with entry fees and prize amounts for the Pablo Neruda Prize, are typically announced separately when that contest opens, so poets should check Submittable and the journal's Substack/social accounts (Twitter, Bluesky, Instagram) for current cycle details rather than assuming year-round open submissions. The magazine is subscriber-supported, with subscriptions handled via a separate university e-store link, and it maintains an active presence on Substack and social media for announcements.
