ABOUT

Hayden's Ferry Review is the literary magazine of Arizona State University's MFA program, founded in 1986 and published out of ASU's creative writing department. Named for a historic ferry crossing on the Salt River near Tempe, it has built a reputation over nearly four decades for pairing internationally sourced poetry, fiction, and nonfiction with work by emerging U.S. writers, and the masthead is staffed by rotating ASU MFA students under faculty oversight, giving the magazine a semi-regular changeover in editorial voice from issue to issue. It sits in the tier of long-running university-affiliated journals (alongside titles like The Iowa Review or Ploughshares) that serve as a proving ground for writers moving from workshop into wider publication.

The current site is a Squarespace-based storefront-cum-archive organized by issue (currently Issue 78), with contributor pages for each writer and artist featured; back issues and current numbers are sold directly through an integrated cart rather than via a separate subscription vendor. The scraped pages don't surface a visible submission portal, reading-period dates, fee, or pay rate, so poets should check the site's Submit page directly before assuming Submittable-free or cost-free entry — many comparable university journals charge a small reading fee during open periods and pay contributors in copies or a modest honorarium rather than by the line. Given the MFA-driven staffing model, expect response times and reading windows to shift somewhat year to year with the academic calendar.
