University of Arkansas MFA

The University of Arkansas MFA in Fayetteville, founded in 1966 by James Whitehead and William Harrison, is one of the handful of four-year programs in the country — twice the apprenticeship of the standard degree, with full funding via teaching. Its poetry lineage includes Miller Williams (co-founder of the press that bears his name and inaugural-poem poet), C.D. Wright, and Frank Stanford, whose Fayetteville years remain local scripture.

The program's translation track is among the oldest anywhere, and the Arkansas International and the Miller Williams Poetry Prize (University of Arkansas Press) keep the ecosystem thick. The four-year clock is the point: time enough to write a real book slowly.
