Stadler Fellowship
ABOUT
The Stadler Fellowship is administered by Bucknell University's Stadler Center for Poetry and Literary Arts, one of the longer-running university-based poetry centers in the United States. The fellowship is aimed at poets who have recently completed an MFA and have not yet published widely, offering a year (sometimes renewable) in residence at Bucknell. Fellows typically teach a creative writing course or two, work alongside the Stadler Center's staff, and gain hands-on experience with the Center's literary magazine, West Branch, giving the fellowship a dual identity as both a writing residency and an informal training ground in small-press and journal editing.
Applicants generally apply directly to Bucknell rather than through a general submissions manager, and the position comes with a stipend, housing or housing allowance, and health benefits, following the pattern of comparable post-MFA teaching-fellowship programs. Because it is a single annual appointment tied to an academic calendar, the application window is narrow and competition is steep — poets should expect a fall deadline for the following academic year's appointment. Specific dollar figures, current deadlines, and the sitting director's name are not listed on this page and should be confirmed directly with the Stadler Center before applying, as terms (course load, stipend amount, length of term) have shifted over the program's history.
