Fine Arts Work Center Fellowship

Seven-month funded winter residencies in Provincetown for emerging poets and artists.

Website

The Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown has hosted its winter fellowship since 1968: seven months (October through April) at the tip of Cape Cod with housing, studio, and a monthly stipend, for ten writers and ten visual artists a year. It is the longest funded stretch of unstructured time available to an emerging American writer outside a university.

Alumni include Louise Glück, Denis Johnson, Michael Cunningham, and Jhumpa Lahiri. Applications are due in early winter for the following fall; second-year returns are possible. The off-season town — empty, cheap, beautiful — is the point.
